A recent survey conducted in the United States has revealed that a majority of American adults are against the idea of legalizing sports betting on college athletics. The survey, conducted by AP-NORC, found that more than half of the respondents believe that betting on college sports should be illegal, contrasting with their more favorable stance towards betting on professional sports.
The landscape of sports betting underwent a significant shift in 2018 following a Supreme Court ruling that overturned a federal ban on sports betting in many states. Presently, sports gambling is permitted in 38 states along with Washington, D.C., with additional states contemplating legalization while having varying regulations in place. The National Conference of State Legislatures has highlighted the substantial financial benefits that states have reaped from the legalization of sports betting.
Despite the growing acceptance of sports betting in general, sentiments towards betting on college sports remain largely negative. According to the survey, 55 percent of participants expressed disapproval of legalizing betting on college athletics in their respective states, whereas 41 percent opposed betting on professional sports. Interestingly, public opinion on the legalization of sports betting has shown little change over time, with current attitudes aligning closely with those from 2019.
The AP-NORC poll, which sampled 1,112 adults between February 6 and 10, utilized the AmeriSpeak Panel based on probability. The margin of error for the survey stands at 4.1 percentage points. This survey sheds light on the prevailing stance among Americans regarding the expansion of sports betting into college sports, highlighting a clear divide in public opinion on this contentious issue.
