Record Surge in Computer Tech Patents: EPO’s 2024 Report

The European Patent Office (EPO) recently released its Patent Index 2024, shedding light on the surge in computer technology inventions and unitary patent requests. The report reveals a significant increase in patent filings, with the demand for unitary patents surpassing expectations. In 2024, the EPO received 199,264 patent applications, maintaining high levels despite a slight decrease from the previous year.

Among the key findings, the United States emerged as the top country of origin for patent applicants at the EPO, followed by Germany, Japan, and China. Notably, South Korea experienced substantial growth in patent applications. Asian companies dominated the top positions in terms of patent filings, with Samsung, LG, and Huawei leading the pack.

The field of computer technology witnessed a notable rise in patent applications, becoming the top technical field in 2024. This surge reflects the increasing influence of artificial intelligence technologies. Additionally, the report highlights the growing popularity of unitary patents, with about 28,000 patents granted by the EPO seeking unitary protection in 2024, accounting for over a quarter of all EU patents issued that year.

Furthermore, efforts to enhance inclusivity in the patent system are evident, with a quarter of EU patent applications listing at least one woman inventor. Spain led in naming women inventors, and a significant percentage of applications came from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and universities. Fee reductions implemented in 2024 played a crucial role in encouraging filings from these entities.

Overall, the EPO’s Patent Index 2024 underscores the continued growth and innovation in the technology sector, with the EU patent landscape evolving to accommodate a diverse range of inventors and entities. The report signifies a shift towards greater inclusivity and accessibility within the patent ecosystem, highlighting the dynamic nature of technological advancements and patent protection mechanisms.
