Children in the south of England displayed their creativity and love for literature on World Book Day, a global celebration of reading and books that has been observed for 28 years. This event saw kids swapping their typical school attire for costumes inspired by beloved literary characters.
From Totton in Hampshire to Oxfordshire and beyond, young participants embraced the spirit of the day by embodying characters from iconic works. Among the standout costumes were Lottie’s portrayal of Fantastic Mr Fox from Roald Dahl’s imagination, Evelyn’s transformation into the Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Rufus’s playful rendition of Wally from the Where’s Wally? series.
The festive atmosphere extended to Newbury, Berkshire, where Charlie and George donned outfits inspired by Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Dog Man from Dav Pilkey’s creations, respectively. Additionally, Freddie from Caversham, Berkshire, meticulously replicated Dipper Pines from Gravity Falls, down to the socks and cap.
At The Prince of Wales School in Dorchester, Dorset, even the staff joined the fun, showcasing their enthusiasm for literary characters. Meanwhile, Cillian from Southampton embodied the spider from The Not-So-Scary Hairy Spider, and Grace from High Wycombe charmed as Elsa from Frozen.
The celebration was inclusive of younger participants as well, with Joey from Ferndown First School in Dorset dressing up as Percy the Park Keeper from the works of Nick Butterworth. Notably, eighteen-month-old Maya captivated hearts as The Very Hungry Caterpillar from the classic by Eric Carle.
