Hunter Sports Centre Unveils $52M Expansion, Becomes Premier NSW Destination

The Hunter Sports Centre has recently undergone a significant transformation with the unveiling of its $52 million expansion, solidifying its status as a premier destination in New South Wales. Michelle Preston-Poole, the acting general manager, expressed her confidence that the upgraded facility would set a benchmark for other towns to envy. The expansion, inaugurated on Saturday, March 8, attracted a host of dignitaries, including local politicians and university representatives.

The state-of-the-art development now boasts a three-level, 4,500-square-meter sports and community center equipped with various amenities such as meeting rooms, a health and fitness area, offices, and a cafe. A notable addition is the Trampoline Centre of Excellence, a pioneering initiative in Australia, featuring a spacious hall with trampolines, tumbling strips, and seating for 400 spectators. This center aims to not only enhance trampolining activities but also serve as a training ground for other aerial sports like skateboarding and skiing.

The funding for this ambitious project was a collaborative effort involving contributions from the local council, the Australian Government through its Building Better Regions and Local Regional Infrastructure programs, and the NSW Government through various funding schemes. The University of Newcastle also seized the opportunity to establish its first permanent presence in Lake Macquarie, including the Trevor Height Athlete Testing Facility. Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky highlighted the immense benefits this facility would offer to students, athletes, and the broader community.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley emphasized the importance of investing in sports infrastructure to support local talent and showcase the region, especially with the prospect of the 2032 Olympics. The community can look forward to an Open Day on March 29, featuring tours, trampolining demonstrations, and entertainment. This event will provide a glimpse into the world-class facilities now available at the Hunter Sports Centre, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sporting landscape.
