Breakthrough: World’s First Biological Computer Unveiled by Australian Startup

An Australian startup, Cortical Labs, has recently unveiled the groundbreaking CL1, the world’s first commercial biological computer. This innovative technology is a result of six years of intensive research, culminating in a revolutionary approach to computing. Unlike traditional silicon-based computers, the CL1 integrates neurons derived from human stem cells with hard silicon, ushering in a new era of Synthetic Biological Intelligence (SBI).

The primary advantage of SBI lies in its ability to evolve, learn, and adapt at a pace far exceeding conventional AI systems powered by silicon chips. Moreover, SBI consumes significantly less energy, with a 30-unit rack of CL1 requiring only 850–1,000 watts, compared to the substantial energy consumption of training large language models on traditional computers.

Cortical Labs’ journey towards the development of the CL1 began with their 2022 breakthrough project, “DishBrain,” where they successfully trained a system comprising 800,000 brain cells to play Pong. This achievement sparked discussions on the potential emergence of synthetic sentience and raised ethical considerations surrounding the cultivation of cells for computational purposes.

Hon Weng Chong, the visionary founder and CEO of Cortical Labs, envisions a future where biological computers like the CL1 are readily accessible to researchers worldwide, eliminating the need for specialized hardware and software. The launch of CL1 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona signifies a significant milestone in the company’s mission to democratize access to cutting-edge technology.

Looking ahead, Cortical Labs aims to mass-produce CL1 units and racks for distribution by the end of the year, offering a unique Wetware-as-a-Service (WaaS) model for remote access to their biological computing platform.
