The John Hunter Health Campus redevelopment is a significant project aimed at enhancing healthcare facilities to meet the growing needs of communities in Greater Newcastle, Hunter New England, and northern NSW. With an investment of $835 million from the NSW Government, the project will see the redevelopment of the John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospitals, catering to the increasing demand for healthcare services in the region.
The redevelopment will involve the construction of a new 7-storey acute services building, a new Emergency Department, and a doubling of the Intensive Care Unit capacity. The project also includes the provision of additional operating theatres, interventional suites, procedure rooms, and flexible education spaces co-located within clinical services. This expansion aims to implement contemporary models of care and improve healthcare services for the community.
One of the key aspects of the project is the development of the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct, which is set to transform healthcare services not only for Newcastle but also for the greater Hunter region and northern NSW communities. The precinct will house a range of services including women’s services, medical assessment units, cardiac observation units, and mental health facilities.
Furthermore, the precinct will feature integrated education and teaching spaces, retail areas, and adult inpatient units. A link bridge will connect the new acute services building to the Hunter Medical Research Institute, fostering collaboration between healthcare, education, and research partners to create new opportunities for education, training, and employment in the healthcare sector.
The project also places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability, aiming to achieve carbon and waste neutrality in operation by 2030. By following environmentally sustainable development practices, the project team is working towards reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and water usage, while also incorporating low-emission materials and maximizing passive design elements for increased occupant well-being.
Community engagement and cultural considerations are integral to the project, with a focus on creating a culturally safe and welcoming space for patients, staff, and visitors. Engagement with First Nations and multicultural communities has played a significant role in shaping the design and cultural aspects of the precinct, ensuring that the healthcare facilities are inclusive and reflective of the diverse community they serve.
As the project progresses through its planning, design, and delivery phases, it is set to become a leading healthcare and innovation hub in the region, driving economic growth, job creation, and improved healthcare outcomes for the community. The John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct stands as a testament to the commitment of the NSW Government to provide world-class healthcare services and infrastructure to meet the evolving needs of the population.
