A recent study published in Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking reveals that despite the widespread attention artificial intelligence (AI) garners, its actual usage in daily online activities is minimal, accounting for less than 1% of online browsing for most individuals. The research aimed to move beyond self-reported data by analyzing the web browsing histories of over 14 million visits to understand the prevalence of AI usage, the characteristics of frequent users, and the psychological traits associated with AI adoption.
With the increasing integration of AI in various aspects of life, including education and work, there is a growing curiosity about how people engage with this technology. Surveys often fail to provide accurate insights into AI usage due to individuals’ misjudgments or forgetfulness about their interactions with AI tools. The study sought to bridge this gap by directly measuring AI use through web browsing data, shedding light on the actual frequency of AI interactions and the personality traits of those who engage with AI more frequently.
The research involved two distinct studies, one focusing on university students and the other on the general public. Participants shared their web browsing histories, allowing researchers to identify AI-related visits and analyze the types of websites visited before and after engaging with AI platforms. Surprisingly, the findings revealed that AI use was infrequent, with only a small fraction of users accounting for the majority of AI-related traffic.
Notably, individuals exhibiting aversive personality traits, such as narcissism and psychopathy, were more inclined to use AI tools regularly. While attitudes towards AI and certain demographics showed some associations with AI use, the strongest correlations were observed with personality traits. The study also highlighted the discrepancy between self-reported AI usage and actual browsing data, emphasizing the limitations of relying solely on individual accounts of technology use.
Moreover, the analysis identified patterns in users’ online activities before and after interacting with AI platforms, suggesting that AI tools are often employed in academic or professional contexts to enhance productivity rather than for entertainment purposes. The study emphasized the need to consider additional psychological and social factors that may influence AI adoption, beyond personality traits and basic demographics.
Although the study focused on web-based interactions and was limited to Google Chrome users, it provided valuable insights into AI usage patterns and the psychological correlates of AI adoption. Future research is encouraged to explore the impact of AI use on various outcomes, such as academic performance and work productivity, to gain a comprehensive understanding of how individuals interact with AI technologies in real-world settings.
