Northern Health Celebrates Inaugural National Orthotist/Prosthetist Day

Northern Health recently observed the inaugural National Orthotist/Prosthetist Day, a significant event celebrated across Australia by The Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association. This day highlighted the crucial role played by orthotists in assisting patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, or injuries. These professionals are responsible for designing, creating, fitting, and managing orthotic devices that support the body, reduce pain, and prevent further injury.

Orthotic devices, such as braces, splints, and supports, are instrumental in enhancing bodily functions and improving the quality of life for individuals with various health conditions and movement disorders. At Northern Health, the Orthotics department, comprising six orthotists, utilizes advanced knowledge and evidence-based practices to address physical and functional limitations in patients. These professionals are university-qualified, specializing in orthotic and prosthetic treatments.

A typical day for an orthotist at Northern Health involves a diverse range of tasks, from triaging referrals and fitting spinal braces to providing orthotic support in fracture clinics and designing custom orthotic devices for patients with specific needs. Jack Yeung, the Clinical Lead of Orthotics at Northern Health, emphasized the gratification derived from witnessing the positive impact of orthotic interventions on patients’ lives. He highlighted the department’s focus on staying abreast of technological advancements to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to patients.

The future of prosthetics and orthotics looks promising, with rapid technological advancements paving the way for innovative solutions. Northern Health’s Orthotics department has already integrated cutting-edge technologies, such as 3D scanning and printing, plantar pressure mapping, and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). These advancements enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of orthotic devices, offering tailored solutions for patients with diverse needs.

The Northern Health team commemorated the National Orthotist/Prosthetist Day with a reflection on the significance of their work and the positive impact they have had on numerous patients. Moving forward, the field of orthotics and prosthetics is poised for further advancements, with a focus on embracing new technologies to enhance patient care and outcomes.
