Musical Therapy: Youth Program Fuses Jazz Funk and Mental Health

A unique program in Caroline Springs is blending jazz funk music with mental health support for young artists. The initiative, known as Testify, aims to provide a platform for budding musicians to showcase their talents while prioritizing their well-being.

Inspired by his own struggles as a young musician seeking opportunities, Associate Pastor Joshua Hennessy launched Testify to offer a space where artists can not only perform but also be compensated fairly. The program seeks to convey a message of self-worth to participants, challenging the notion that exposure alone is sufficient reward for their craft.

Partnering with the youth mental health organization Headspace, Testify integrates musical performances with personal accounts of mental health challenges. This fusion of art and introspection aims to destigmatize mental health discussions and promote an environment of openness and support.

Saxophonist and vocalist Leon Varela-Mauna, a member of the local band Quincoction, emphasized the significance of Testify in addressing mental health issues, especially in today’s context. He praised the program for fostering a sense of community and inclusivity among artists from diverse backgrounds.

The collaboration between Testify and Headspace has been made possible through the support of the Melbourne Anglican Foundation’s Youth Grants, which empower parishes to implement innovative youth initiatives. Development Manager Nathan Oliver highlighted the positive impact of churches providing a platform for young people to engage in conversations around mental health within their communities.

The inaugural Testify event is scheduled for April 11, promising a blend of musical performances and candid discussions on mental health. By creating a safe space for artistic expression and mental health dialogue, Testify exemplifies the intersection of music, community, and well-being in a unique and impactful manner.
