In a bid to regulate the thriving sports betting sector, Massachusetts has introduced the “Bettor Health Act,” a new bill spearheaded by State Senator John Keenan. The move comes in response to escalating concerns surrounding the rapid proliferation of sports betting activities within the state, as reported by CBS News.
Senator Keenan emphasized the exponential growth of the multi-billion-dollar sports betting industry, noting that individuals increasingly find it challenging to enjoy sporting events without being inundated with betting-related content. This saturation has led to a sentiment of overwhelming exposure to gambling, prompting the need for stricter regulations to safeguard consumers.
The “Bettor Health Act” encompasses various measures aimed at curbing excessive gambling behaviors. These include a substantial increase in the tax rate imposed on online betting platforms, elevating it from 20% to 51%. Additionally, the bill aims to prohibit sports betting advertisements during live game broadcasts and establish daily betting limits for consumers until operators conduct affordability assessments to ensure responsible gambling practices.
The proposed legislation has elicited a mixed response from different stakeholders. While individuals grappling with gambling addiction and some consumers have welcomed the bill for its provisions requiring betting companies to enhance their contributions to public addiction services, the gaming industry has expressed reservations.
The Sports Betting Alliance, representing major players like DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM, has voiced opposition to the bill’s proposed tax hikes. The group cautioned that such tax increments could potentially drive Massachusetts residents towards unregulated offshore betting platforms, which are not subject to state regulations. This shift could lead to consumers opting for offshore platforms offering better odds due to their tax-free status, exacerbating the disparity in competitiveness.
