Griffith University is embarking on a transformative journey in health and advanced technology innovation by establishing the Health and Advanced Technology Research and Innovation Centre (HATRIC) on the Gold Coast. This groundbreaking initiative, supported by a $35 million investment, is set to revolutionize the landscape of research and development in the region. The project, backed by a significant grant from the South East Queensland Innovation Economy Fund, as well as contributions from the Gold Coast City Council and Economic Development Queensland (EDQ), aims to propel the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct (GCHKP) into a hub of cutting-edge advancements.
Situated within the GCHKP, the HATRIC will serve as a nucleus of innovation, housing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Advanced Design and Prototyping Technologies Institute (ADaPT), an expanded Clinical Trials Unit, and cutting-edge biomedical research and commercialization spaces. By seamlessly integrating Griffith University’s top-tier research capabilities with industry development, the Centre is poised to drive innovation and commercialization in collaboration with industry leaders. The EDQ’s involvement will particularly focus on supporting emerging start-ups in transitioning into scalable businesses, further solidifying the Precinct’s standing as a center for transformative health and biotech breakthroughs.
With a strategic focus on fostering collaboration among researchers, students, industry partners, and scale-ups, HATRIC is positioned to accelerate translational research projects while providing unparalleled learning experiences for students. The Centre’s emphasis on biomedical breakthroughs, spanning areas such as spinal injury repair, artificial ligaments, quantum technologies, and medical waste recycling, will position the Gold Coast as a frontrunner in biomedical research and biotechnology on a national scale.
The success of this ambitious endeavor is a testament to years of concerted efforts and collaboration among Griffith University teams, government entities, and industry stakeholders. Special recognition is extended to Professor Bronwyn Harch and her team for their unwavering dedication in securing the substantial grant that has paved the way for the realization of HATRIC.
As the latest addition to the Gold Coast’s innovation landscape, HATRIC holds the promise of not only advancing research and technology but also fostering economic growth, creating job opportunities, and positioning the region as a leader in the field of health and advanced technology. With its cutting-edge infrastructure, collaborative ethos, and focus on driving innovation, HATRIC is poised to leave a lasting impact on the Gold Coast’s research and development ecosystem, propelling it to new heights of excellence in the realms of health and technology.
