Tabcorp Holdings Limited has recently settled a penalty of $262,920 for engaging in illegal online in-play sports betting activities in Australia. The investigation conducted by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) revealed that Tabcorp accepted 854 in-play bets on 69 tennis matches between April and October 2023.
Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, online in-play betting, which involves placing wagers on a sporting event after it has started, is strictly prohibited in Australia. ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood emphasized that the ban on in-play betting serves to safeguard vulnerable individuals from the potential harms associated with increased access to gambling opportunities.
Lidgerwood pointed out that the prevalence of online sports betting has surged in recent years, underscoring the necessity for stringent measures to prevent the acceptance of illegal in-play bets. The ability to place bets frequently on various outcomes during live sporting events can heighten the risks of gambling-related harm.
During the investigation, Tabcorp attributed the breaches to a technical glitch in its systems. Despite the issue surfacing in April 2023, it persisted until October of the same year. Lidgerwood expressed concern over the six-month delay in identifying and rectifying the system error, especially given Tabcorp’s standing as a prominent wagering operator.
In response to the penalty, Tabcorp not only made the payment but also outlined the implementation of new controls and future measures to mitigate the acceptance of online in-play bets. The company informed ACMA that it had voided all bets affected by the errors to prevent any financial losses for consumers and ensure that Tabcorp did not benefit from the situation.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Tabcorp has come under scrutiny for engaging in in-play betting activities. In November 2021, the company received a formal warning from ACMA for accepting in-play bets on a United States college basketball game.
