Students at the Barbados Fire Academy in Arch Hall, St Thomas, experienced a captivating journey into the world of chemistry during a hands-on workshop organized by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The event, themed Fire and Water, aimed to showcase the practical applications of science in everyday life, engaging 75 enthusiastic children in a day filled with scientific exploration.
Dr. Claire Durant, a representative of the Royal Society of Chemistry, emphasized the real-world relevance of chemistry beyond theoretical formulas, highlighting the potential for exciting career paths in the field. The workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Barbados Fire Service, focused on fire safety, prevention, and the essential knowledge required to handle fire incidents effectively.
Fire Officer Shalika Charles led a session on fire safety in homes, urging participants to recognize and rectify hazardous household practices while emphasizing the importance of developing a comprehensive fire escape plan. Practical demonstrations on the proper use of fire extinguishers were provided, with participants learning about different types of extinguishers suitable for various fire emergencies.
As excitement built, students engaged in hands-on experiments showcasing chemical reactions when different gases interact with fire, offering them a firsthand glimpse into the dynamic nature of chemistry. The highlight of the workshop was the opportunity for students to extinguish live fires under the guidance of experienced professionals, providing a unique and immersive learning experience.
Carib Supply, a key sponsor of the event, demonstrated a range of fire safety tools and personal protective equipment, highlighting the essential gear used by professionals in firefighting scenarios. Participants also had the chance to explore a real fire truck, climbing aboard to experience the equipment and technology utilized by firefighters in their daily operations.
By the conclusion of the workshop, students not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed a profound appreciation for the critical role of science, particularly chemistry, in safeguarding lives and shaping the world around them. The event served as a platform for inspiring young minds and fostering a deeper understanding of the practical applications of scientific principles in ensuring community safety and well-being.
