World Field Epidemiology Day, celebrated on September 7, recognizes the critical role of field epidemiologists in safeguarding global health. These disease detectives, trained by organizations like the CDC, play a vital role in responding to public health crises and preventing the spread of diseases across borders.
On this year’s World Field Epidemiology Day, the CDC’s Division of Global Health Protection highlights the impact of its Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) and the dedicated field epidemiologists it has trained worldwide. These professionals are at the forefront of combating health emergencies, ranging from Anthrax to Ebola and from cholera to COVID-19, working tirelessly to ensure the safety of communities.
One such example is the swift response to the resurfacing of Sudan ebolavirus in Uganda in early 2025. CDC-trained disease detectives collaborated with local health authorities to contain the outbreak within six weeks, preventing its international spread. Through targeted case investigations, contact tracing, and community interventions, they effectively curbed the spread of the virus.
In Haiti, CDC-supported disease detectives played a crucial role in controlling a cholera outbreak by identifying contaminated water sources and implementing urgent public health measures. Their rapid response and coordination with local health agencies helped reduce mortality rates and prevent further transmission of the disease.
In India, initiatives have been introduced to empower women in public health by offering flexible training options that allow them to participate in Field Epidemiology Training Programs (FETPs) without relocation. By breaking down traditional barriers, these programs are enabling more women to become leaders in public health and enhancing the country’s capacity to respond to outbreaks.
Uganda faced a serious public health threat from anthrax in 2023, which was linked to the consumption of infected animal meat. CDC-supported FETP fellows identified the source of the outbreak, a black market for illegal meat, leading to improved control measures across the country. Their efforts were instrumental in preventing further cases of anthrax.
Recognizing the need for more field epidemiologists during the COVID-19 pandemic, South Africa launched its first Intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Program in collaboration with local and international partners. This initiative aims to equip health workers with the necessary skills to effectively respond to outbreaks, ensuring a robust public health workforce.
The CDC’s Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) has been instrumental in building a global network of disease detectives over the past four decades. With over 85 FETPs worldwide, in partnership with 100 countries, these programs are strengthening field epidemiology capacities and enhancing global health security.
Collaborative efforts with organizations like the Training Programs in Epidemiology and Public Health Interventions Network (TEPHINET) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have further bolstered the capabilities of field epidemiologists globally. These partnerships aim to address gaps, enhance training programs, and build a skilled public health workforce to tackle emerging health challenges.
