President Donald Trump is set to embark on a journey to the Middle East to kick off a ceasefire agreement that could potentially bring an end to Israel’s two-year war in Gaza. The “peace summit” will be co-chaired by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, coinciding with the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.
On Monday, a summit will take place in the Egyptian town of Sharm el-Sheikh, with Trump, el-Sissi, and a multitude of global leaders in attendance. Notably absent from the summit are representatives from Israel, Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority, each with their reasons for not participating.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II are among the confirmed attendees. Invitations were extended to various other nations, including Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, with uncertainty surrounding their attendance.
The summit aims to bring an end to the war in Gaza, enhance peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability, as per an Egyptian spokesperson. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, laid the groundwork for the meeting in Israel over the weekend.
The fragile ceasefire, agreed upon by Israel and Hamas, is currently holding, with Israel beginning to withdraw forces, anticipating the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. The plan includes the exchange of hostages and prisoners, a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza, and the transition to later stages of Trump’s peace plan.
The ceasefire comes after two years of devastation in Gaza, with over 67,000 Palestinians killed and 169,000 injured. The conflict began when Hamas launched an attack on Israel in 2023, resulting in significant civilian casualties and a large number of hostages taken.
Israel has faced accusations of genocide in Gaza, leading to arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Netanyahu and other officials. The ongoing conflict has put significant international pressure on Israel and Hamas, with the hope that the ceasefire will pave the way for peace and reconstruction in the region.
