A request by two sporting organizations in Tablelands Regional Council has sparked hope for a new cue sports facility. The Tablelands Cue Sports and Malanda Billiards Club presented their case at a recent council meeting, seeking a greenfield site for a dedicated building to accommodate their future plans.
In response to the request, council officers initially recommended against providing a new facility, citing surplus community assets and poor utilization as reasons. However, Drew Parker from Tablelands Cue Sports challenged this recommendation, emphasizing the potential benefits a new facility could bring to the community, especially in engaging disadvantaged youth.
Parker highlighted the growing popularity of cue sports like snooker, billiards, and pool, noting that state organizations were considering relocating competitions to regional areas if suitable facilities were available. The clubs aimed to expand their outreach to youth for positive inter-generational interactions.
Deputy Mayor Dave Bilney echoed support for a better facility, acknowledging the current capacity constraints hindering membership growth. He emphasized the importance of considering opportunities presented by community-led projects, particularly in addressing the needs of aging or socially isolated residents.
Following Parker’s compelling presentation, Cr Kevin Cardew changed his stance on refusing a greenfield site to the clubs. Council members voted to task officers with exploring existing facilities and potential greenfield sites for the construction of a new cue sports venue.
The debate highlighted the need for balancing financial considerations with the social value that a dedicated facility could offer. While council assets were aging and underutilized, the push for community-focused projects like this underscored the importance of meeting diverse demographic needs.
As discussions continue between the sporting organizations and council officers, the possibility of a new cue sports facility in Tablelands Regional Council remains a beacon of hope for enthusiasts and community members alike.
The ongoing dialogue exemplifies the evolving landscape of sports infrastructure development, where local initiatives drive the conversation on creating inclusive and purpose-built facilities to cater to diverse community interests.
With a growing emphasis on engaging youth, fostering inter-generational connections, and addressing the needs of underserved demographics, the potential impact of a new cue sports facility extends beyond recreation, enriching social cohesion and community well-being.
As the quest for a suitable venue continues, the collaborative efforts between sporting groups and local authorities underscore the importance of investing in facilities that not only cater to current needs but also anticipate and accommodate future demands, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive sporting landscape for all.
