Healthcare industry has been rapidly adopting generative AI to revolutionize operations and engage stakeholders effectively. McKinsey’s surveys with healthcare leaders have unveiled significant insights into the current trends and future outlook of generative AI integration in healthcare.
The latest survey conducted in the fourth quarter of 2024 revealed that a substantial 85 percent of healthcare leaders from various sectors were either exploring or had already implemented generative AI capabilities within their organizations. This indicates a strong inclination towards leveraging AI technologies to enhance healthcare services.
McKinsey’s research methodology involved gathering insights from stakeholders in payer organizations, health systems, and healthcare services and technology (HST) groups. The aim was to understand the plans, implementation levels, anticipated benefits, and ROI expectations associated with generative AI solutions in healthcare.
Notably, the survey included responses from 150 stakeholders, with a considerable representation of C-level executives and organizations with substantial revenue. The data revealed four distinct themes that emerged from the responses.
Majority of the respondents indicated that their organizations were either implementing generative AI use cases or developing proofs of concept. While some organizations were progressing swiftly with their investments, there were still a notable 15 percent who had not initiated proof-of-concept use cases, potentially risking falling behind early adopters.
Partnerships emerged as a prevalent strategy among those implementing generative AI, with a significant percentage intending to collaborate with third-party vendors for customized solutions. Existing IT solution partners and hyperscalers were key players in these partnerships, leveraging their expertise in data management.
The potential of generative AI in healthcare lies in its ability to enhance patient experience, streamline operations, and generate cost savings. Respondents highlighted administrative efficiency, clinical productivity, patient engagement, and IT infrastructure as key areas where generative AI could create substantial value.
Moreover, many organizations are keen on quantifying the impact of their generative AI investments, with a significant percentage already reporting positive ROI. This underscores the high expectations surrounding the technology’s ability to drive tangible benefits in healthcare.
Despite the challenges posed by evolving regulations and internal capability gaps, healthcare stakeholders are actively pursuing generative AI solutions to create value and reduce costs across various functions. Partnerships with hyperscalers are seen as a strategic move to ensure successful implementations, tapping into their data management capabilities.
As organizations progress in their generative AI journey, the focus is shifting towards enhancing patient and member experiences, improving quality-of-care use cases, and addressing risk management in AI implementations. A value-driven strategy, robust delivery capabilities, and effective organizational management are crucial for successful and scalable generative AI integration in healthcare.
