A new multi-million dollar enclosed sports complex has opened its doors in Canberra’s south just in time for the winter season. Sporting groups in Phillip have lauded the completion of the new Phillip district enclosed oval pavilion, marking its official opening ceremony over the weekend.
The Woden Valley Rams, set to utilize the new complex, expressed their delight at the enhanced facilities, emphasizing the benefits to the Rams community. The $9.26 million development offers south-side athletes improved seating, change rooms, and lighting for winter games, alongside upgrades to existing facilities.
The complex now features LED lighting enabling night games, upgraded maintenance, facilities, and common areas aimed at enhancing player experiences. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the refurbished Michael O’Connor Grandstand, extra parking, and a new kiosk on-site.
Sports Minister Yvette Berry inaugurated the new building, hailing it as an iconic and beloved Canberra facility. The government highlighted that all change rooms are now fully compliant with female-friendly requirements, reflecting the need for inclusive sports facilities.
Construction of the pavilion began in 2021 after the territory government allocated $7.5 million during the 2020 election. Following consultation with local sporting groups like Canberra Royals Rugby Union and others, construction commenced in August last year to address deficiencies in facilities.
The development forms part of a broader initiative by the ACT Government to upgrade sports facilities across the capital, with funding directed towards enhancing local oval facilities in various suburbs.
Phase 2 of the Phillip Oval upgrades is scheduled to begin on July 6, focusing on playing surface enhancements and further upgrades to existing facilities, according to Minister Berry. The development aims to cater to the growing needs of local sports clubs and provide a welcoming space for the broader community to engage in sports and recreation.
The completion of the new sports pavilion in Phillip signifies a significant investment in the region’s sporting infrastructure, enhancing opportunities for athletes and spectators alike as they gear up for the winter season.
