Microsoft is delving into the realm of AI to expedite scientific breakthroughs. At the recent Build 2025 conference, the tech giant unveiled Microsoft Discovery, an innovative platform leveraging AI to revolutionize the scientific discovery process. This platform, described as “extensible,” is designed to manage various science-related tasks from start to finish.
According to Microsoft, the aim of Microsoft Discovery is to facilitate research and discovery by employing agentic AI. This encompasses tasks such as scientific knowledge reasoning, hypothesis formulation, candidate generation, and simulation and analysis. By collaborating with specialized AI agents, scientists and researchers can enhance the pace, scale, and accuracy of scientific outcomes using cutting-edge AI and supercomputing technologies.
Microsoft joins a host of AI labs enthusiastic about the potential of AI in scientific endeavors. Google, for instance, introduced an “AI co-scientist” earlier this year to assist in hypothesis creation and research planning. Other entities like Anthropic, OpenAI, FutureHouse, and Lila Sciences have also emphasized the role of AI in accelerating scientific discoveries, particularly in fields like medicine.
Despite the optimism surrounding AI’s application in science, many researchers remain skeptical about its current efficacy in guiding the scientific process due to concerns about reliability. One of the key challenges in developing an “AI scientist” lies in accounting for numerous unforeseen variables that can impact outcomes. While AI may excel in tasks requiring broad exploration, its capacity for innovative problem-solving leading to groundbreaking discoveries remains uncertain.
Results from AI systems implemented in scientific research have been met with mixed reviews. For instance, Google’s AI, GNoME, purportedly aided in synthesizing around 40 new materials in 2023. However, an external evaluation revealed that none of these materials were genuinely novel. Similarly, several firms utilizing AI for drug discovery, such as Exscientia and BenevolentAI, have faced setbacks with high-profile clinical trial failures.
Microsoft’s venture into AI-driven scientific discovery with Microsoft Discovery signals a concerted effort to overcome past limitations and enhance the efficacy of AI in scientific endeavors. By harnessing the potential of AI technologies, Microsoft aims to push the boundaries of scientific research and foster accelerated innovation in various fields.
